PCTFE (Polychlorotrifluoroethylene) is a thermoplastic chlorofluoropolymer that exhibits a range of exceptional mechanical properties. It is a homopolymer of chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) and shares similarities with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), albeit with distinct characteristics. PCTFE is synthesised through free radical polymerization techniques, including solution, bulk, suspension, and emulsion polymerisation.

PCTFE has been manufactured under various trade names, with Neoflon PCTFE from Daikin Industries LTD being a prominent producer. AFT Fluorotec takes immense pride in being an authorised processor of Neoflon PCTFE by Daikin.

ADVANTAGES OF USING PCTFE

  • High thermal strength
  • Excellent thermal characteristics
  • Remarkable non-flammability.
  • Optical transparency
  • High compressive strength
  • Low deformation under load
  • Rigidity
  • Excellent Chemical Resistance

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE PCTFE

PCTFE is an incredibly versatile material that can be used across a wide range of industries, however, PCTFE finds its niche in cryogenic applications, where its exceptional physical properties at low temperatures come to the forefront. As well as being approved by the FDA, there are many reasons to choose PCTFE, some of which are:

Chemical resistance

It is Chemically Resistant & Inert

PCTFE is resistant to chemicals and oxidising agents due to its high fluorine content.

Tolerant of high temperatures

IT IS STABLE AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES

PCTFE maintains dimensional stability over a wide temperature range.

IT HAS STRONG GAS AND MOISTURE BARRIERS

PCTFE displays extremely low gas permeability and moisture absorption.

WHAT CAN PCTFE BE USED FOR?

Some of the most common uses for PCTFE include valve seats, seals, sight glasses, and windows in cryogenic environments.

While PCTFE is widely regarded as the go-to sealing material for cryogenic and liquid gas applications, AFT Fluorotec offers a range of other materials specifically developed for low-temperature use. AF825, a recent addition to our materials fleet, combines excellent coefficient of friction at dynamic temperatures with the desirable properties of PEEK (PAEK). For spring energised sealing and low gas permeation, our AF 617 modified PTFE materials, available in virgin and filled grades, offer superior sealing performance on low temperature applications.
